International Medical Insurance
Most people don't think about health insurance when traveling abroad until
there is an emergency. They arrive at the hospital to discover something
frightening--their health insurance will not cover all of their medical bills.
Language barriers and differences in culture make the problem worse. Lack of
insurance in a foreign country can jeopardize not only a bank account, but a
person’s life. While some traditional insurance companies cover international
healthcare, others exclude some of these expenses. Purchasing an international
medical insurance policy before the departure date will prevent the above
tragedy.
What Is International Medical Insurance?
International medical insurance is very much like any traditional health
insurance; however, the benefits follow a person everywhere they travel outside
their home country. It is a truly portable plan. In addition to the normal
hospitalization, prescription, and emergency coverage, many international
health insurance plans also offer medical evacuation coverage--which is
essential when stranded in a country with limited medical care.
Differences Between Traditional and International Medical Insurance
Traditional insurance may exclude some medical expenses in foreign countries.
International policies limit coverage in the home country. Most international
companies also have medical evacuation coverage and act as an intermediary
between doctors and patients. Sometimes payment is disbursed in local currency
cutting out a lot of red tape and easing the bureaucratic nightmare.
Who Needs International Medical Insurance?
From expatriates working around the world, oil company employees in the Middle
Eastern desert, to those brave sea fishermen, an international plan provides
primary health benefits and peace of mind. The vacationer visiting abroad for a
few weeks may need temporary coverage--either to replace their regular plan
while out of the country, or to supplement expenses their primary company will
not pay. Relatively inexpensive, these policies are well worth the extra money
to ensure the broadest possible protection. Before taking off for that dream
destination, it is very important for the traveler to check with his or her
insurance company about international health benefits.
