International Health Insurance
Most domestic insurance coverage does not provide adequate travel medical
insurance and does not provide the necessary emergency medical evacuation
coverage or other coverage needed by foreign travelers. For those working and
living abroad, accessing quality health insurance can be difficult with the
cost of medical treatment being very expensive. There are companies that
provide international health insurance offering not only the basic health care
coverage but a wide range of benefits.
Who Needs International Health Insurance?
Anyone who is spending time outside his home country will want to consider
atleast a short term plan. However, people who need it most are people who are
relocating or spending an extensive amount of time away from their native
country.
Levels of Coverage
Many companies offer international health insurance coverage to meet the needs
of people living abroad. Premiums and policies will vary depending on the
company. Basic plans normally cover hospital care, physicians, surgeons, and
some specialists including pathology, radiology, oncology, and radiotherapy.
Ambulence rides are often covered as well. Some plans may also include primary
care as well as some types of therapies. Emergency dentistry and home nursing
care may be options as well. For people seeking more extensive health plans,
many companies offer comprehensive plans for those willing to pay higher
premiums. These plans generally cover rehabilitation, psychiatry, organ
transplants, childbirth, ear and eye specialists among other possible options.
Some international health care plans offer emergency travel medical and
evacuation coverage in the basic health plan, but most include an offer to add
it for an extra fee. This coverage provides transportation from anywhere in the
world to the nearest high quality medical center or to the hospital of your
choice for emergency medical treatment, and it usually includes reasonable fare
to your current residence after recovery. There will be variation with
companies and policies. Be sure to research thoroughly before deciding which
plan is best for you.
